If you only have one day in Beijing. What should you do? If I were in your shoes I will visit Badaling Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City. These three places are top attractions in Beijing even in whole China.
Tiananmen Square -The biggest downtown Square with abundant historical and political events. There is a Chinese Song named "I love Tianananmen Square". All Chinese sing this song since childhood including editor.
Mysterious Forbidden City is the world's largest palace complex of several hundreds of years ago. It is not necessary for me to introduce the Great Wall - the only things can be seen from the Moon. From the north end of Tiananmen Square; we will enter the Forbidden City.
Visit Forbidden City along the central axis for about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Have lunch on the way to Badaling Great Wall.
Take sightseeing on Badaling Great Wall for 1.5 to 2 hours.
About 18:00, transfer back to your hotel after the whole day tour. (Lunch)

Tiananmen Square: the biggest downtown Square of the world.
Forbidden City: also called Palace Museum and is located at the center of Beijing. It was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Rectangular in shape, Forbidden City is the world's largest palace complex.
Badaling Great Wall: Badaling is the most famous section of Great Wall, well maintained. It is easy to walk along this section of defensive project of ancient China.
