Residence of General Joseph W. Stilwell,
4.5km southeast of the downtown in Chongqing, is a place where General
Stilwell was lived.
General
Stilwell (1883-1946) was chief commander of US forces in the China-Burma-India
Theatre during World War II. In
1942, ranked as a major general, he was dispatched to CBI and was regarded
as the best field commander in the entire United States Army.
From Nov. 23, 1911 to May 5, 1942, General Stilwell came to China five
times. He was a true friend of the Chinese people and a Chinese linguist.
In May 5, 1942, he came to China for fifth time. He stayed in Chongqing
and served as the US Army Commander of the CBI Theatre while supervising
the implementation of Lend-Lease in CBI. Between March and June of 1944,
He led the Chinese troops fighting strenuously against the Japanese invaders
in Burma and won the battle. He also directed the project of road construction
via Ledo, India, Burma to Yunnan. The road was open to traffic in 1945
and named after Stilwell. On October, 20 of 1944, General Stilwell left
Chongqing for detesting the corrupt government of the Nationalist Party
led by Chiang-Kai-shek.
