Chongqing, short for “Yu”, is the biggest municipality directly under the Central Government of China with vast geographical area and population density. It located at the edge of Yungui Plateau, and is the confluence of Jialing River and Yangtze River. It contains Daba Shan in the north, Wu Shan in the east, Wuling Shan in the southeast, and Dalou Mountain to the south.
Covering an area of 23,114 square kilometers and a population of more than 31 million, Chongqing city enjoy a subtropical climate, with an annual average temperature of 18 °C (64 °F) and the annual precipitation about 1000-1400 mm. Chongqing is called “Mountain City” for its hilly terrain. And just because this unique terrain, it was very hot in summer, the highest temperature can even reach 47 °C, so it also renowned as one of the “ Three Furnace” in China.
Chongqing city was first built in Zhou Dynasty at 11th century and through thousand of years’ development, it gradually become the largest industrial and commercial city in southwestern China and the economic center of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Its main industries are machinery, metallurgy, chemicals, foodstuff and textiles. Chongqing holds an important position in China in aluminum processing, machine tool and instrument manufacturing and inland-water shipbuilding. In agriculture, it produces large quantity of rice, grapes, peanuts, sugarcanes, tobacco, oranges, silk-cocoons and pigs. Chongqing is rich in natural resources, with more than 40 kinds of minerals. Its coal reserves are estimated to be 4.8 billion tonnes. The Chuandong Natural Gas Field in Chongqing is China's largest inland production base of natural gas, with deposits of 270 billion m³, accounting for more than one-fifth of China's total. Chongqing is the largest commercial center and land and water communication hub in Southwest China. The port of Chongqing is the biggest in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
Chongqing and its surrounding areas are full of tourism resources. The famous “Three Gorges Scenery Zone” and the “Da Zu Stone Carvings” which was carved in Tang Dynasty have attracted numerous visitors all around the world. Besides, Chongqing is famous for its hot spicy food, when you visit there, it cannot be missed.
