Hanging
Temple, located at the foot of Mt. Hengshan and 65 kilometers from Datong
City, has a history of more than 1,400 years. It hangs on the west cliff
of Jinxia Gorge more than 50 meters above the ground, hence the name.
Hanging Temple
is an architectural wonder. unique mechanical theory was applied to building
the framework, so that it clings to the cliff side, appearing to defy
gravity with only a few wooden posts as support. The construction mixes
mechanics, aesthetics, and Buddhism, which attracts many experts from
countries including Britain, Germany, and Italy to come to see the temple.
The most
interesting thing is that the temple belongs to all the three major religions
in China: Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. In the temple, There is
a hall where the main figures of all three, the sculptures of Sakyamuni,
Confucius and Laotzu, are sitting together. Hanging Temple has 40 halls
and cabinets, which contain about 80 sculptures made of copper, iron,
terracotta, and stone.
