Day 1. Datong
English speaking tour guide will pick you up from hotel.
Visit the Yungang Grotto. The three main sites in China that are famous for their stone sculpture are Dunhuang, Longmen and Yungang. Among these, the Yungang grottoes are considered first among equals, for their tremendous size, their ancient history, and their relatively complete state of preservation.
Then we will visit the Nine Dragon Screen. Built over 600 years ago, it is presently the oldest and largest glazed screen in China today. It is three times larger than that in Beihai Park.
Move on to visit Huayan Monastery. Built during the Liao Dynasty (907 - 1125), the Huayan Monastery is the largest and best preserved monastery of the Liao Dynasty in existence in China.
Drive to visit Shanhua Monastery located in central Datong within the old city walls. It was first constructed during the Tang dynasty (618-907AD) though most of the present wooden building dates back to the 12th century. The monastery houses some intricately carved Jin dynasty (265-420AD) statues and has a screen wall decorated with dragons.
Be transferred
back to your hotel after the tour.
(Lunch)
Day 2. Datong - Taiyuan
Drive to Taiyuan. Visit the Hanging Temple, which has a history of more than 1,400 years. About 40 buildings survived are scattered halfway up the mountain on the cliff face or slopes, from 26 to 50 meters above the foot of the mountain. The temple buildings which seem to be hanging in midair on the cliffs are unique in structure.
Arrive in Taiyuan. Move on to visit the Jinci Temple. It was built in the Bei Wei Dynasty (386-534) in memory of Shuyu, the second son of Zhouwu kingdom. The temple is a famous garden of ancient buildings, in compound with hall, pavilions, and towers. The cypress, the long-life Spring and the painted clay figures of maids in the Saintly Mother's Hall are reputed as Jinci Temple's 'three wonders'.
Drive to Pingyao to visit the ancient town kept in original style.
Overnight in Pingyao Ancient City.
(Breakfast, Lunch)
Day 3. Pingyao-Taiyuan
Walk along the Ancient City Wall. The city wall of Pingyao was originally built using rammed earth, and was rebuilt with bricks in 1370 during the reign of Emperor Hong Wu of the Ming Dynasty. The wall testifies to the profound influence of Confucianism in this region, as the 3,000 embrasures on the wall are said to represent the number of disciples of Confucius, and the 72 small watchtowers represent his 72 top disciples. Move on to visit Shuanglin Temple, which has stood there for 1,500 years since the North Wei Dynasty.
Visit the Courtyard of Family Qiao, a set of houses built long ago, which are representative of the wealth attained by the Shanxi Merchants.
Be transferred to hotel in Taiyuan or train station for departure.
