Shanghai
Grand Theatre is located in the political and cultural center of Shanghai.
It occupies an area of 2.1 hectares, facing the People's Boulevard in
the south, next to the Shanghai Municipal Building in the East. The theatre
is one of the landmark buildings in Shanghai.
Shanghai
Grand Theatre was designed by a French architect who came up with a complete
design scheme including materials and lighting. It has 10 storeys, two for underground, two for lofts and six on the ground. The
building seems to be made almost entirely from glass and the reflections
of artificial and natural light are simply stunning.
The roof of the building is an upturned arc, resembling a treasure bowl
and said to symbolize Shanghai's openness and progressive spirit. The
patterns of lobby shaped like piano digital, together with the pillar
and the stairs, are full of rhythms. The main theatre auditorium provides
a stage for artists from throughout the world and it is always worth checking
it out to see who is performing.
Shanghai
Grand Theatre consists of three theatres, differing in size and function. With
1,800 seats, the lyric theatre is made up of the main stage, the rear
stage, the left wing and the right wing. Ballet, musical, and orchestra
are performed here. It has played host to the Russian Kirov Ballet and
the British Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The drama theatre has 750 seats
and the studio theatre has 300 seats. All these stages can be removed,
lifted, sloped and rotated.Controlled by computer, the stage equipment
can satisfy the requirement of the world-class performing troupes. When
the evening is approaching and when the lights are beginning to be on,
Shanghai Grand Theatre looks like a brilliant crystal palace.
There are also a good restauran, a shopping center, VIP room, cafe, and
underground garage in the Theatre, Maxim's of Paris and a bar at the top
of the building which affords great views over the Square.
