Wu
Gorge extends
from the mouth of the DaningRiver in Wushan County, Chongqing City in
the west to Guandukou in Badong County, Hubei Province in the east. It
44 kilometers long and known for its deep valley and quiet beauty.
Wu
Gorge is full of zigzags, weird peaks, rising mists and beautiful sights.
Boats zigzag their way along, as if cruising in a fantastic gallery. It
is the most beautiful part of the Yangtze, green trees and bushes, together
with fogs and clouds, cover the high peaks.
Wu
Gorge is most noted for its 12 sculpted peaks endowed with various fascinating
shapes. Among them, The most famous is Goddess Peak. The graceful shape
of which resembles a girl looking down at the boats in the river. It is
said that Yao Ji, one of the daughters of the Queen Mother of the West,
stumbled upon 12 dragons who were wreaking havoc on the river and mountains,
leaving a deluge of floods and destruction in their wake. She resigned
herself to the tallest peak to protect the boatmen and peasants. She and
her maidens make up the 12 sentinel peaks.
