Yangguan
Pass sits 70 kilometers (about 43.5 miles) southwest of Dunhuang. It is
the gateway to the south western of the ancient Silk Road.
Yangguan Pass and Yumen guan Pass were the two important military stronghold
protecting Dunhuang from invasion from the Huns since114 B.C. in Han Dynasty.
Yangguan Pass has a history of over 2000 years and great sections is devoured
by shifting sands. However the ever-refulgent pass hardly in sight, the
ancient relics such as bricks, pottery pieces etc. in the sand dunes nearby
are the evidence of civilization here.
