Depart

Visit the Wugong Temple. In order to commemorate the
five historic figures who were banished to Hainan Province in Tang Dynasty
and Song Dynasty, it was built during the reign of Emperor Wanli in Ming
Dynasty (1368-1644AD). It houses some rare cultural relics of Hainan Province
including the Forbidden Bell in Ming Dynasty, the ancient copper drum
and Xuande Stove of Lizu people. The temple was called "Jade Terrace
and Wonderful Land" because of the refined scenery and the antique
buildings.
Then we will visit the Tomb of Hairui. Situated in the western outskirts
of Haikou, it was built in 1589 in memory of Hai Rui, a statesman famed
for his honesty and performance of his duty. Around the impressive building
is a park planted with coconut trees, pines, junipers and bamboos.
After
lunch at a local restaurant, we will drive to visit the Qiongtai Academy in southeast Haikou.
It was built 270 years ago in memory of Qiu Jun, a famous scholar from
the Ming Dynasty. At one time, it was the the highest academic institution
in Hainan and now is the site of the Qiongshan Teachers' Training School.
The two-storey main building is made of brick and wood and is rich in
traditional ethnic characteristics.
