First we will Five Officials Memorial Temple. It is a large temple complex originally constructed in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) during the reign of Emperor Wanlin. Central in importance among the various temples within the compound is the Wugong Temple, which commemorates five famous officials banished to Hainan during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). This renovated temple is renowned for its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful architecture.
Proceed to visit the Tomb of Hai Rui. A highly principled, upright and outspoken minister during the mid-Ming Dynasty, he was regarded as the ‘lord of the civilians’. The tomb was built in 1589 under the order of Emperor Wanlin to commemorate Hai Rui’s honesty in performing official duties, justice in enforcing laws and bravery in defying influential officials.
Finally, move on to visit Haikou Shishan Volcanic Cluster National Geopark. Located approximately 9.3 miles (about 15 kilometres) from the city centre of Haikou, this natural volcano geology museum was awarded Geopark status by UNESCO and offers a splendid insight into the early formation of Hainan Island. The geopark spans approximately 69 square miles (about 180 square kilometres), and consists of over 40 Quaternary volcanoes with a number of lava landscapes and up to 30 volcanic caves.
The eruption of the ancient Qiongbei Volcano left the most intact volcano craters here. According to geologists, the last eruption happened about 13,000 years ago. Today, 36 remnants of the craters can be seen here. At approximately 732 feet (about 223 metres) in height, Saddle Hill is the tallest of the lot.
