First go to visit Haikou Mangrove Tree Reserve Area. Known for the largest and the first mangrove natural reserve area in China, Dongzhai Harbor is located in the northeast of Haikou City with an area of 3337.6 hectares (about 8247 acres). It is a typical tropical jungle, and the mangrove tree family can be seen everywhere in the area. Mangrove is a kind of tropical tree that grows in swamps and sends roots down from its branches. When the tide is high, the mangroves are submerged by thewater, and leave only the green crowns for people to wonder at their marvelous nature. Then proceed to Haikou Shishan Volcanic Cluster National Geopark. Located approximately 9.3 miles (about 15 kilometres) from the city centre of Haikou, this natural volcano geology museum was awarded Geopark status by UNESCO and offers a splendid insight into the early formation of Hainan Island. The geopark spans approximately 69 square miles (about 180 square kilometres), and consists of over 40 Quaternary volcanoes with a number of lava landscapes and up to 30 volcanic caves.
The eruption of the ancient Qiongbei Volcano left the most intact volcano craters here. According to geologists, the last eruption happened about 13,000 years ago. Today, 36 remnants of the craters can be seen here. At approximately 732 feet (about 223 metres) in height, Saddle Hill is the tallest of the lot.
